Daily Itinerary

Day 1 – Departure

Depart the U.S. on your overnight flight to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Day 2 – Arrive Rio de Janeiro

Upon your morning arrival to Rio de Janeiro, you will be greeted by your Program Leader and transfer to your lodging.

Over your first traditional Brazilian meal, your Program Leader will discuss the wonders of Brazil with you and how economic problems affect the people of this beautiful nation.

In the afternoon, you will have a city tour, finishing at the wonderful Corcovado Mountain to enjoy a fantastic view of Rio from the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Day 3 – Travel to Host Community

Transfer to your host community on the coast of Brazil to the southwest of Rio de Janeiro. Your new friends are descendants of former slaves who settled there. You will learn about their traditional way of life and how they are working to preserve their community while welcoming visitors through their rural tourism project.

Days 4 - 7 –  Community Service

During these days you will engage in a combination of service projects and cultural exchange activities. Your cultural exchange activities may include impromptu soccer games, cooking classes, basket weaving lessons, drumming and samba dance lessons, capoeira demonstration, English-Portuguese lessons, and more activities characteristic of the community.

Your specific service project(s) will depend upon the needs and requests of the host community at the time of your visit. Examples of service projects include renovating classrooms, making improvements at a community center, painting a local health clinic, planting a sustainable garden for a school, designing and creating a medicinal plant garden for a women’s cooperative, and teaching English as a second language.

On the last night in the community everybody will gather together to celebrate the conclusion of service project and to have a party with new friends.

Day 8 –  Beach Day and Return to Rio de Janeiro

Today you will return to Rio de Janeiro with a picnic visit to a beautiful beach en route.

After settling into your lodging in the city, you will have some time to relax and have dinner before your evening activity.

In the late evening you will be treated to a unique excursion to visit an escola de samba, where performers practice year-round for the thrilling live music and dancing for Carnaval.

Day 9 – Rio de Janeiro

This morning you will visit a favela and learn more about the portion of Brazil´s population with the least access to basic services.

This afternoon, go behind the scenes of the famous Maracanã soccer stadium. You'll see the Tribune Press,  the locker rooms, the Grandstand, the cabins, and a collection of relics of the stars who made the history of this world soccer temple.

This evening you will have a farewell dinner to celebrate your time in Brazil.

Day 10 – Rio de Janeiro, Departure

Today you will relax on the lovely and world-famous Copacabana and/or Ipanema Beach and will share free time with the group. You will also have some time to shop in the many boutiques in the area.
