Los Angeles Overview

The sprawling city of Los Angeles in Southern California is the second largest city in the United States and home to over 17 million people. LA is a hub for the film and television industries, providing students with the opportunity to experience live recordings of popular TV shows and movie screenings. One of the top attractions in Los Angeles is the iconic Hollywood Boulevard, which boasts museums, theatres, and landmarks dedicated to the entertainment industry. Visitors also won’t want to miss the Hollywood sign, which is perched in the Hollywood Hills and visible from a variety of points in the surrounding area.

Los Angeles has a wealth of beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and points of geographic interest. Santa Monica Beach is a favorite among visitors and locals alike, offering plenty of activities along the beach’s famous boardwalk. The Griffith Observatory is situated above the city on Mount Hollywood and offers excellent views, as well as multiple telescopes, a planetarium, and science exhibits. Los Angeles is home to many world-class performance venues, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Ahmanson Theater, which host performances by top musicians, dancers, and theater companies. Furthermore, the city is home to numerous music schools, theater programs, and dance academies, offering students the chance to develop their own performance skills and explore their creative passions.

Weekly farmers’ markets all over Los Angeles offer fresh, local produce, all kinds of specialty foods and other delectable treats. The Original Farmers Market at the intersection of 3rd Street and Fairfax Avenue is an open-air marketplace that includes over 100 produce stands. Founded in 1934, The Original Famers market includes many merchants that have been family-owned and operated for decades.

Hollywood & Film

On Hollywood Boulevard students can see many iconic tributes to American film such as The Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Museum, the TCL Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood & Highland Mall.

Taking a backlot tour at Universal Studios Hollywood or the Warner Brothers VIP Tour allows visitors to see real props and sets from popular movies and learn from guides about aspects of film production. The Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland theme parks bring popular movies to life with themed rides and entertainment students won’t want to miss.

Santa Monica

Santa Monica Pier is one of California’s oldest pleasure piers and is within walking distance of the Third Street Promenade and the newly refurbished Santa Monica Place Mall.

The Griffith Observatory

This iconic place is a national leader in public astronomy, a beloved civic gathering place, and one of southern California’s most popular attractions. Located on the south slope of Mt. Hollywood, the Observatory lets visitors look through public telescopes, experience astronomy exhibits and enjoy the most spectacular views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign.
